Short answer: Sponsored articles in Japanese media are advertising, sold with published or quoted rates and labeled as PR or 広告. Published examples: Impress's Watch sites listed a native tie-up at ¥1.5 million before tax with 10,000–15,000 guaranteed page views (April–June 2025 guide), and Shogakukan's @DIME listed tie-ups at ¥1.6–3.0 million gross before tax with 15,000–30,000 guaranteed page views (2023 guide). Many outlets don't publish rates. These prices may have changed.

What you are buying

A sponsored article goes by several names in Japan: タイアップ記事 (tie-up article), 記事広告 (advertorial), ネイティブタイアップ (native tie-up) or ブランデッドコンテンツ. The mechanics are the same. You pay the outlet, its team produces an article about your product in its own style, and the article is published and promoted for an agreed period.

Three things make it different from editorial coverage:

  • You agree on the content. Topic, key messages and usually a fact check before publication.
  • Delivery is contracted. Many packages guarantee a number of page views (PV).
  • It must be labeled as advertising. That's both the outlet's rule and, for you as the advertiser, the law.

Impress Watch sites: native tie-up

Impress Consumer Media's guide for April–June 2025 lists a ネイティブタイアップ (PV保証) at ¥1,500,000, covering production and media, with all prices excluding tax (Impress media guide, April–June 2025, in Japanese). The guarantee, measured over a one-month report, is 15,000 PV on PC Watch, AKIBA PC Hotline!, INTERNET Watch, 窓の杜, Impress Watch, ケータイ Watch, 家電 Watch, GAME Watch, AV Watch and トラベル Watch, and 10,000 PV on Car Watch, デジカメ Watch, グルメ Watch and HOBBY Watch. More than 20,000 PV is available on request.

Other details from the same guide:

  • The article uses each site's normal article design and is promoted through the article headline list, guaranteed a top-three position on day one.
  • The report gives daily PV for a month.
  • Impress may decline a booking if the guaranteed PV looks unachievable for the product.
  • A custom tie-up starts from ¥800,000 for production, plus a separate promotion fee.

The guide describes native tie-ups as looking almost the same as normal articles. It doesn't state the label wording, so ask what label your article will carry.

@DIME and DIME: tie-ups and print

Shogakukan's DIME media guide for January–June 2023 lists four web tie-up plans for @DIME, all excluding tax, gross and including production, each published for one month (Shogakukan DIME media guide, 2023, in Japanese):

  • Trial tie-up: ¥1.6 million, 15,000 PV guaranteed, for new clients only
  • Standard tie-up: ¥2.0 million, 20,000 PV, described as the most standard plan
  • Premium tie-up: ¥2.8 million, 30,000 PV
  • HTML tie-up: ¥3.0 million, 20,000 PV

The guide says a PR label is mandatory (PR表記 必須), that external traffic may be used to reach the guaranteed PV, and that the report covers daily PV and unique users, reader attributes and click-through. Bookings close 25 business days before publication, with orientation at 20 and materials at 15 (35, 30 and 25 for the HTML plan).

For the print magazine, the same guide lists an inside full-color page at ¥1.6 million and the back cover at ¥2.1 million; the rate table doesn't state tax status. Those 2023 figures are more than three years old. Shogakukan has published newer guides since; we couldn't access their contents.

Yahoo! News: paid release placement

LY Corporation launched ニュースPR by LINEヤフー in July 2026 as a paid service. One plan publishes the release text as written; the other uses generative AI to restructure it into a news-style article. Placements appear in the same format as normal news articles, and a title and thumbnail may appear on the Yahoo! JAPAN top page or recommendation slots, but that exposure isn't guaranteed and there's no view guarantee (LY Corporation, July 2026, in Japanese).

Its first results show why platform traffic isn't article reach: the median paid article drew a few thousand page views on a platform with billions a month. See Japanese news aggregators for the figures.

Outlets that don't publish rates

For several well-known Japanese tech and gadget outlets, we couldn't find current public tie-up rates: ITmedia, ASCII.jp (KADOKAWA), Gizmodo Japan (Mediagene) and GetNavi (ONE PUBLISHING). Their media guides are distributed on request or through download services. Don't rely on old figures circulating online; ask the publisher's ad sales team for the current guide.

How PV guarantees work, and what they don't tell you

A PV guarantee is a delivery promise: the outlet commits to a number of page views over the period, usually a month, and keeps promoting until it gets there. That makes paid placement predictable in a way earned coverage never is. Read the terms closely:

  • What counts. Page views of the article, over a stated period. Not readers, and not people who bought.
  • How the outlet gets there. @DIME's 2023 guide says external traffic may be used to reach the PV. Ask whether the views come from the outlet's own readers, from paid social, or both.
  • What the report includes. Daily PV is standard; reader attributes, click-through and time on page vary.
  • Cost per view. On the published figures (our calculation), ¥1.5 million for 15,000 PV is ¥100 per guaranteed view; @DIME's plans work out at about ¥93 to ¥150. That's a useful sense check against other paid media, not a measure of value.

What a PV guarantee can't tell you is whether readers believed the article. A labeled tie-up is read as advertising. It can explain a product well and reach the right audience; it doesn't carry the independent judgment of an editorial review.

Labeling and the stealth marketing rules

Since 1 October 2023, hiding that something is advertising has been regulated in Japan as stealth marketing. The rule covers social posts, reviews, TV, newspapers, radio and magazines, and the advertiser is the party regulated (Consumer Affairs Agency, in Japanese). In practice:

  • Tie-ups carry a label such as PR or 広告. @DIME's guide makes the PR label mandatory.
  • The label must be clear. Per Forbes JAPAN's report on the operating guidelines, making 広告 or PR small or faint, or burying #PR among many hashtags, isn't acceptable (Forbes JAPAN, March 2023, in Japanese).
  • Reusing the article is still advertising. If you quote a tie-up on your product page or in ads, keep it identifiable as sponsored content, not as an independent review.
  • Don't buy "editorial" coverage. Paying an outlet well beyond normal reporting cooperation can turn an article into your own advertisement, which then has to be labeled.

Keeping sponsored content clearly labeled

  1. 11

    Agree on the label

    • PR or 広告, shown clearly
    • Ask what the outlet uses
  2. 22

    Check before publishing

    • Not small or faint
    • Not buried in hashtags
  3. 33

    Reuse carefully

    • Keep it marked as sponsored on your own pages and ads
  4. 44

    Report separately

    • Paid and earned on different lines
Japan's stealth marketing rules, in force since 1 October 2023, hold the advertiser responsible.

When paid placement makes sense, and when earned PR does

Paid placement is usually worth considering when:

  • You need a fixed date, such as a crowdfunding launch or a retail start, and can't wait for editors' schedules.
  • You need a guaranteed explanation of a product that is hard to understand in a short news item.
  • Earned coverage has already happened, and you want more reach among the same readers.
  • The product is on sale in Japan, with a purchase link the article can send readers to.

Earned PR usually comes first when:

  • The brand is unknown in Japan and needs independent credibility.
  • Budget is limited. A single tie-up at these published rates takes a large share of a typical launch budget.
  • The product is still being prepared for Japan. Paying to explain a product readers can't buy wastes the guarantee.

Many launches do both, in that order: earned coverage to establish credibility, then labeled sponsored content where reach is missing. Report them separately. For how paid media, creator agencies and PR agencies differ, see Japan PR vs influencer vs advertising agency.

Beyond the article

Some ad packages now extend sponsored content beyond publishers' own sites. One example: in July 2026, Dentsu announced SNSマガジン for リテール, which takes publisher-made social content from magazine brands such as VOCE, ViVi, MonoMax and リンネル to in-store POP and digital signage at Tsuruha and Welcia group drugstores (Dentsu via Kyodo News PR Wire, July 2026, in Japanese). It's a paid ad package, and no results data was published. If you're offered similar packages, treat them as advertising and ask what is measured.

Where Gloture fits

Our work is earned media: Japanese materials, outreach to editors, review units and reporting. When a client also wants paid placements, we help plan where they fit and keep them labeled and reported separately from independent coverage. Modern-G is Gloture's own gadget and technology media, and it sells labeled placements. We're not affiliated with the other outlets named here. Product PR in Japan starts from US$2,500. We don't guarantee coverage. For market estimates of PR, creator and other costs, see the Japan PR cost estimator, or start a Japan PR Review.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sponsored article cost in Japanese tech media?

Published examples include ¥1.5 million excluding tax for a native tie-up on Impress's Watch sites (April–June 2025 guide) and ¥1.6–3.0 million gross for @DIME tie-ups (2023 guide), each with a page-view guarantee. Many outlets, including ITmedia, ASCII.jp, Gizmodo Japan and GetNavi, don't publish current rates, so ask for the latest media guide.

Is Yahoo! News PR the same as being covered by Yahoo! News?

No. ニュースPR is a paid placement of your release, with no view guarantee. Editorial coverage on Yahoo! News means an article written by one of the news outlets whose content it carries, decided by that outlet's editors.

Do sponsored articles in Japan have to be labeled?

Yes. Since 1 October 2023, undisclosed advertising is regulated as stealth marketing, and the advertiser is responsible. Outlets label tie-ups with PR or 広告, and @DIME's media guide, for example, makes the PR label mandatory.
