Short answer: For home appliances in Japan, the main specialist site is Impress's Kaden Watch, alongside AV Watch for audio and video, Keitai Watch and PC Watch for phone- and PC-linked devices, ITmedia NEWS's くらテク section, GetNavi web, 360LiFE (the web home of the test magazine 家電批評), Kakaku.com Magazine and BCN+R for sales data. We found no sizable Japanese media outlet dedicated only to smart home; smart-home products are covered by these general tech and appliance outlets. Editors expect Japanese specifications, plug and voltage details, radio certification for wireless products, a Japanese-language app and a clear way to buy in Japan.
How smart-home and appliance coverage works in Japan
In the US or Europe, a smart-home brand can pitch outlets that cover nothing else. In Japan, we found no established smart-home-only publication with published audience figures. Coverage of smart-home brands and standards appears instead in general tech and appliance media: for example, INTERNET Watch reported SwitchBot's expansion of Matter support in April 2024 (INTERNET Watch, April 2024, in Japanese), and BCN+R covered SwitchBot in February 2026 (BCN+R, February 2026, in Japanese). Individual gadget bloggers also write about smart-home devices.
So the question for an overseas brand isn't "which smart-home site?" but "which appliance or tech editor covers what my product does?" A robot vacuum, a smart speaker, a door lock and a kitchen appliance may each belong with a different outlet.
This guide covers outlets for home appliances, smart-home devices and consumer electronics. For a broader list of Japanese gadget websites by specialty, see our guide to Japanese gadget websites. Inclusion doesn't mean Gloture has coverage in, or a relationship with, any outlet.

The outlets, by category
Kaden Watch (家電 Watch): home appliances
Kaden Watch is the Impress site for home appliances. It has covered appliances since 2006, with news and hands-on reviews. Impress reports 9,747,500 monthly page views and 3,241,338 monthly unique browsers for July 2026 (Impress ad guide, in Japanese). These are publisher-reported, unaudited site totals, not the readership of any one article.
It's the first outlet to consider for kitchen appliances, cleaning devices, air and climate products, and home devices that are appliances first and "smart" second.
AV Watch: audio, video and home entertainment
AV Watch covers the AV industry, 4K, hi-res audio and streaming. Impress reports 19,024,448 monthly PV and 2,106,720 UB for July 2026 (Impress ad guide, in Japanese). Speakers, soundbars, projectors, TVs and streaming devices fit here. Expect editors in this category to want to listen to or watch the product themselves.
Keitai Watch and PC Watch: phone- and PC-linked devices
Keitai Watch (ケータイ Watch) covers mobile phones and smartphones; Impress reports 14,546,388 PV and 3,313,802 UB for July 2026 (Impress ad guide, in Japanese). PC Watch covers PCs, AI and semiconductors, with 18,234,259 PV and 2,522,417 UB for July 2026 (Impress ad guide, in Japanese).
Neither is a smart-home site, but both can fit a device whose story is its phone app, its connectivity or its link to a computer: trackers, smart displays, chargers, network devices and PC peripherals.
ITmedia NEWS くらテク and ITmedia PC USER
くらテク (Kura-Tech) is the lifestyle-tech section of ITmedia NEWS, covering consumer gadgets, recorders, projectors and cameras. The former ITmedia LifeStyle address now redirects to it (ITmedia NEWS くらテク, in Japanese, checked 20 October 2026). ITmedia's own description of ITmedia PC USER includes smart speakers, VR/AR and peripherals (ITmedia media data, in Japanese). Both suit connected devices with a technology angle.
GetNavi web: new products across the home
GetNavi web, published by One Publishing, covers appliances, digital gadgets, mobility and household goods, and is linked to the print magazine GetNavi. It runs a dedicated feature on getting started with smart home (【特集】スマートホームの始め方). It suits products that are new, easy to explain and useful in daily life.
360LiFE and 家電批評: test-led reviews
360LiFE is the web home of Shinyusha's test magazines, including 家電批評 (Kaden Hihyo) and MONOQLO (both launched in 2009) and LDK. Shinyusha says its in-house test body, LAB.360, has tested products since 2019 across more than 300 categories, and that editors buy most products themselves, with some lent by makers. The site earns from affiliate links and display ads.
For a brand, this means you can't buy the verdict. Your product can be bought and compared with competitors whether you pitch or not. Make sure the product, packaging, Japanese manual and support hold up to a side-by-side test.
Kakaku.com Magazine (価格.comマガジン): hands-on reviews
Kakaku.com Magazine, run by Kakaku.com, Inc., publishes product articles in categories including PCs and smartphones, AV appliances, household appliances, cameras, and home and interiors. We found no smart-home category and no published audience figures. It fits products that Japanese shoppers compare on price and specifications.
BCN+R: what is actually selling
BCN+R describes itself as media about the IT and appliance products that sell. It is built around the BCN Ranking, daily sales data from electronics retailers and e-commerce including Amazon, plus appliance and IT news and the BCN AWARD. No audience figures are published on the site. BCN+R is useful for a retail or market angle, such as a category that is growing or a brand entering Japanese retail, more than for a single product review.

What appliance and smart-home editors need
Appliance editors in Japan write for readers who will plug the product in at home. If the basics are missing, the editor has to chase them, and many won't.
Japanese specifications. Dimensions, weight, power consumption, noise level, capacity, battery life and what's in the box, in Japanese and in metric units. Editors compare products line by line.
Plug type and rated voltage for Japan. State the plug and the voltage the product is rated for in Japan. If it ships with an adapter or a region-specific model, say so.
Electrical safety (PSE) where it applies. Many electrical products, including lithium-ion batteries, must carry the PSE marking to be sold in Japan. Editors are wary of promoting products that may not be legal to sell yet.
Radio certification (技適, giteki) for wireless products. Products with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or other radio functions may need certification under Japan's Radio Act, shown by the giteki mark. For a smart-home device, expect to be asked about it early.
An app in Japanese. For connected products, the app is part of the review. A Japanese interface, Japanese setup instructions and Japanese support make a big difference. State which voice assistants and standards the product works with in Japan.
Availability in Japan. Price in yen, release date and where to buy. A product that isn't yet sold in Japan is much harder for editors to cover, and a test magazine can't buy it.
A review unit. Most appliance reviews are hands-on. Decide your loan terms, and be ready for the editor to take time.
For the full list of compliance areas, see the Japan product compliance and license checklist. It isn't legal advice; confirm your product's requirements with a qualified specialist.

Pitching by subcategory
Robot vacuums, cleaning and kitchen appliances. Kaden Watch first, then GetNavi web, 360LiFE and Kakaku.com Magazine. Lead with what the product does better than the models already on Japanese shelves, and show it in a Japanese-sized home.
Smart-home hubs, sensors, locks and lighting. There's no specialist smart-home outlet to pitch, so look at outlets that have recently covered similar devices: Impress Watch and INTERNET Watch, ITmedia NEWS くらテク, GetNavi web's smart-home feature and BCN+R. Explain setup, the Japanese app and compatibility clearly.
Speakers, projectors, TVs and audio. AV Watch, くらテク and Kakaku.com Magazine. Offer a unit for listening or viewing tests.
Phone-linked gadgets and trackers. Keitai Watch and ITmedia Mobile, plus gadget sites such as GIZMODO JAPAN. Compatibility with Japanese phones and services matters.
PC-linked devices and peripherals. PC Watch and ITmedia PC USER.
Retail and market stories. BCN+R, when you have a Japanese retail launch or market data to talk about.
Send each outlet a tailored Japanese release through its official route, rather than the same text to every site. See how to get Japanese media to cover your product.

Timing around trade shows
Many appliance and smart-home launches are timed to CES, IFA or CEATEC, and Japanese appliance editors cover those shows. If you announce at one, prepare the Japanese release and price before show week. For 2027 dates, audiences and published stand prices, see smart home and appliance trade shows in 2027.
Where Gloture fits
For overseas smart-home and appliance brands, we work out which Japanese editors cover what your product actually does, check that the basics editors ask about (Japanese specifications, plug and voltage, certification status, app language and availability) are in the Japanese materials, and approach the outlets that fit. We don't provide compliance certification or legal advice. Product PR in Japan starts from US$2,500. We don't guarantee coverage or reviews: editors decide, and test-led outlets buy and judge products on their own terms. To check your product's fit, start a Japan PR Review.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Japanese media outlet just for smart home?
We found no sizable one with published audience figures. Smart-home products are covered by general tech and appliance outlets such as Kaden Watch, INTERNET Watch, ITmedia NEWS くらテク, BCN+R and GetNavi web, which has a smart-home feature, plus individual bloggers.
Can we pay 360LiFE or 家電批評 for a good review?
No. Shinyusha says its editors buy most products for testing, with some lent by makers, and tests them in its own lab. The site carries ads and affiliate links, but the verdict comes from the test.
Do we need giteki certification before pitching Japanese media?
If your product uses Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or other radio functions, check its giteki status before you pitch. Editors are wary of promoting products that may not be legal to sell in Japan, so expect the question.
