Short answer: There's no single price for launching a product in Japan. The total depends on your launch route (crowdfunding, a marketplace, your own store or retail), how much of the work is already done, and what your product category requires. What you can do is list the cost categories every launch touches: localization, a Japanese product page, PR materials, samples, channel and platform fees, compliance checks, manuals and support, logistics, and post-launch follow-up. Then estimate each one for your own product. This guide walks through those categories. It doesn't give a market-average total, because no reliable one exists.

Why there is no single "Japan launch cost"

Two brands can launch similar products in Japan with very different budgets. One may already have Japanese packaging, PSE marking and a distributor; another may be starting from an English Kickstarter page. Platform fees are published and comparable, but most other costs depend on scope: how many pages, how many samples, how much is done in-house. Any figure quoted as "the cost to launch in Japan" without that context is a guess.

How to estimate a Japan launch budget

  1. 1Choose the routeCrowdfunding, marketplace, own store or retail
  2. 2List the categoriesLocalization, page, PR, samples, fees, compliance, support, logistics, follow-up
  3. 3Estimate what's missingOnly for work not already done

Cost category 1: product localization

Turning your product information into natural Japanese: the product story, page copy, specifications and claims. This is more than translation; see How to Localize Your Product Story for the Japanese Market.

Cost category 2: Japanese landing page or product page

Copy, layout, images and the information Japanese buyers expect: price including tax, specifications, compatibility, FAQ, support, and for online sales the seller disclosure required by law (Consumer Affairs Agency, in Japanese). See the Japan Product Page Checklist.

Cost category 3: PR kit and press release

A Japanese press release, product images, video, a specification sheet and a short story of why the product exists. If you distribute the release through a wire service, that service's fee is separate. See the Japan PR Kit Checklist.

Cost category 4: media and reviewer sample preparation

Units for editors and reviewers, shipping within Japan, and units that work on Japanese power and plugs. Decide in advance whether samples are loans or gifts, and who pays for returns.

Cost category 5: crowdfunding or EC setup

For crowdfunding, a Japanese campaign page, visuals and rewards. For e-commerce, listings or a store, and someone to answer customers in Japanese. Both take time even before any fee is paid.

Cost category 6: marketplace, platform and sales-channel costs

These are the most predictable costs, because platforms publish them. For example, Amazon Japan lists a monthly fee for professional sellers plus referral fees by category (Amazon Japan seller pricing, in Japanese), and Japanese crowdfunding platforms publish a fee on the amount raised (Makuake, CAMPFIRE, in Japanese). Fees change, so check the current pages when you plan. Retail and distributor margins aren't published and are negotiated case by case.

Cost category 7: product compliance and category checks

Electrical products may need PSE marking, wireless products technical conformity certification, and food-contact, cosmetics or children's products have their own rules (METI, MIC, in Japanese). Testing and specialist fees vary widely by product. See the Japan Product Compliance and License Checklist.

Cost category 8: manuals, FAQ and support information

A Japanese manual or quick-start guide, an FAQ, and a support contact who replies in Japanese. These are easy to leave until last and hard to rush.

Cost category 9: logistics, inventory and fulfillment readiness

Shipping to Japan, import duties and consumption tax, warehousing or fulfillment services, and returns handling. Your logistics provider or importer can quote these; they depend on volume, size and route.

Cost category 10: post-launch follow-up and proof assets

A coverage report, updated product pages, customer questions turned into FAQ, and materials for the next channel. Budgets often stop at launch day, but this is where much of the long-term value of PR comes from.

An illustrative budget-planning framework

The table below is an illustrative planning aid, not a price list or market average. It shows where effort tends to be heavier or lighter by route, so you can see which categories to estimate first.

What Product PR can and cannot do

PR can help Japanese media and buyers understand your product: a Japanese story, press materials, outreach and a coverage report. It can't replace compliance, logistics, support or a complete product page, and it can't guarantee coverage or sales. Budgeting for PR makes sense once the basics it depends on are in place or planned.
